Latin American Music Awards: Bad Bunny takes home 5 awards; Carrie Underwood steals the show with David Bisbal

Shakira, Selena Gomez, Anitta, Jennifer Lopez, Anuel AA, Bad Bunny, Karol G and J Balvin

Bad Bunny was absent for this year's Latin American Music Awards but still won big, taking home five out of the eight awards he was nominated for. Karol G was the night's second-biggest winner, taking home three awards thanks to her song of the year "Tusa," featuring Nicki Minaj.

Up against J Balvin, who led the award show's nominations, reggaeton veteran Daddy Yankee, Maluma and Karol G, Bad Bunny won the award for "Artist of the Year." But Karol G came out on top for "Song of the Year" with Nicki Minaj, beating out Bad Bunny's "Yo Perreo Sola" and Maluma & The Weeknd's "Hawái."

Ushering in a new generation of Puerto Rican reggaeton artists, Rauw Alejandro took home the award for "New Artist of the Year."

Going into Thursday’s awards show, Colombian artists J Balvin and Karol G led the nominee pack with nine each. Balvin’s “Colores” album and Black Eyed Peas collaboration on "Ritmo (Bad Boys for Life)” earned nods for album and song of the year, respectively. However, the 35-year-old singer didn't win any awards. Karol G was up for artist of the year (so was Balvin) and her “Tusa” collaboration with Nicki Minaj earned three nominations including song of the year.

Some of Latin music’s biggest artists performed, including Anitta, who kicked off the show with a sultry performance, Ricky Martin was joined by Carlos Vives to perform their song "Canción Bonita," Maluma performed alongside Wisin and Myke Towers, and Karol G was joined by Mariah Angeliq to perform "El Makinon" off of her latest album "KG0516." Country music star Carrie Underwood joined Spanish crooner Bisbal for their first-ever television performance of "Tears of Gold."

The Latin AMAs were hosted by Jacqueline Bracamontes and broadcast on Telemundo from the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida.

Like the American Music Awards, the Latin AMAs are voted on by fans. The nominations were based on fan interactions with music, including streaming, sales, airplay and social activity tracked by Billboard through its data partners MRC Data and Next Big Sound from Jan. 17, 2020 through Jan. 21, 2021.
