Australian
football player Josh Cavallo reveals he is gay in Instagram video
Received
support from the team and attacks on social media
On
October 26, 2021, 22-year-old Australian player Josh
Cavallo, who plays for the Adelaide United,
shared with his followers and fans that he is a
gay man. At the time he made the statement through
his social networks, the left-back/midfielder
received the support of football players and clubs
around the world.
Now,
three months after these events, the athlete
revealed that he has received several threats and
offenses on his profiles on the networks. In
addition, Joshua also reported having suffered
attacks even during football matches played inside
the stadiums.
“I'm
not going to pretend I didn't see or hear
homophobic slurs at last night's game. There are
no words to say how disappointed I was”,
began the young man, speaking on his Instagram
about the match against Melbourne Victory held on
Saturday, (8/1). “As a society, this
demonstrates that we are still facing these issues
in 2022. Hate will never win. I will never
apologize for living my truth and who I am outside
of football.”
Shortly
after Joshua Cavallo's report, Melbourne Victory
published through its website a note repudiating
the attitude taken by the team's fans and informed
that it is investigating the situation. “The
Club is committed to celebrating diversity in
football and strongly condemns this behavior that
has no place in our club or our game.”
